No. 1. Fribbtastic EPIDEMIC :*☆─σ ( ಠ ロ ಠ )ノ • 5 yr. ago. That will take me awhile to fully level up. It doesn't really, HoT and PoF maps give you 10 Hero Points for each Hero Challenge that means you would need to do only 25 Hero Challenges to fully unlock the Elite Spec.
It is, by definition, THE Bruiser class. Gains Barrier as it deals more damage to foes. It also has access to a lot of passive defenses. It can grant Quickness and Superspeed to themselves and allies, making them very fast. Wields a Hammer, which has access to a number of CCs and Blocks.
How to get hero points for elite specializations fast. The HoT and PoF maps give 10 points per challenge and are run quite regularly by groups of people. The PoF ones are quite easy solo, but the HoT ones are a bit harder and might need a 2-3 man party. Save all the rest of your HP to complete the first Core Specialization at 21, the Elite Skill at 31, and the second Core Specialization at 45. Up till 45, HP are too scarce and you need to save as many as possible to complete those three as early as possible. Without the Core Specs, Mesmer is fairly weak.
You state that the elite specializations are subpar. But when explaining why, we get the statements like the above quoted paragraph. You say nothing. Yes you type words, but these statements have no substantive meaning. The only thing I can say to you is: It sucks that you don't like the new elite specializations.
You can improve your gear from exotic to ascended. You can unlock and learn how to use new elite specializations in various contexts; PvP, PvE, Fractals/Raids, WvW. However, usage varies and properly understanding all the tools at your disposal is a big part of becoming a successful and independent GW2 player. Take your time.

It feels weird to spend so much time leveling a profession just to play as something that plays differently later on. I know some mechanics stay the same but so much changes also
